At the end of Pulp Fiction what exactly was the point of Jules giving Pumpkin his money so he wouldn't have to?

He was buying something, just like he said. He was buying the man's life so he wouldn't have to kill him. At that point, Jules was trying to go straight. He didn't want to kill the guy, so he gave him his money to prove a point, and to give the man a reason to just let everything (especially Jules) go.
