Need to file 1040X amended return?

I'm confused about this. I've been told a couple of different things by different people and do not understand the IRS site's answer. I did not file my taxes for three years but my husband file "married filing separate". I'm trying to catch mine up. Do I file Amendment to his and make it a joint return or do I have to file single first on a regular return?
